Every year in Koenji in Tokyo there is an Awaordori Matsuri festival held over two days.
The dance / style of festival originates from Tokushima on Shikoku island in the south of Japan.
More than a million people watch the even over the two day period.
My wife is a member of the Koenji Tenshoren Awaordori team and I was lucky enough to stumble upon the chance to shoot the team during the event in 2008.
Each year since I have shot for the team at the event and have slowly realized how luck I am to have been allowed this type of access.

There seemed to be a world that people passed by on a daily basis and that no one had taken an interest in. So I began exploring the neighborhood, looking for little places of life with interesting angles and backgrounds. These little places are dying out but if you look hard enough you might still find them.

I really couldn’t believe what I saw and had to turn back to check.
I found a guy in a very non descript building busy building a bicycle frame.
Takai San explained he was from Kyoto and had moved to Tokyo to set up his business.
Without a second thought I asked him if I could spend some time shooting him while he built a few frames and he agreed.
I was surprised at just how much effort, skill and knowledge goes into making a frame.
Unfortunately the series remains unfinished due to our mismatched schedules.
Below is a series of frames I managed to take over the summer in 2011.
